Reinventing My Life at 50 (and Starting YouTube at 59)
When I turned 50, I made a decision that would quietly change the way I lived my life.
Instead of letting the years blur together, I chose to make each birthday month a fresh start—a time to set goals, try new things, and push myself into experiences I might have otherwise avoided. No pressure to be perfect, no expectation to master everything… just a commitment to try.
That simple promise became a tradition.
A Birthday Month, Every Year
Each year, as my birthday approached, I would sit down and ask myself:
What have I never tried before?
What have I been putting off?
What sounds fun, challenging, or just a little outside my comfort zone?
Some years were filled with small adventures—new recipes, new routines, new hobbies. Other years pushed me further into learning and creativity. The point was never to go big. The point was to go new.
And over time, those “new things” added up to something bigger than I expected: confidence, curiosity, and a sense that it’s never too late to start anything.
Capturing the Journey
For a long time, I documented these experiences on Pinterest. It became my visual journal—a place where I could share what I was trying, what worked, what didn’t, and what I discovered along the way.
Photos of projects. Finished dishes. Little wins.
It wasn’t about perfection. It was about progress.
Turning 59: A Bigger Leap
Then came 59.
And with it, a bigger goal than I had ever set before: I decided to start a YouTube channel.
Now, I won’t pretend that didn’t feel intimidating. Putting yourself on video is a whole different level of vulnerability. But that’s exactly why it fit my birthday goal philosophy.
If it scares you a little… it’s probably worth trying.
Starting that channel wasn’t about becoming an expert or going viral. It was about documenting the journey in a more real, more personal way—and maybe inspiring someone else to try something new too.
Where My Goals Are Taking Me Now
Lately, my goals have shifted in a direction that feels both grounding and meaningful.
I’ve been focusing on:
Reading more and expanding what I learn
Learning how to can and preserve food
Making more meals from scratch
There’s something deeply satisfying about these skills. They slow life down in the best way. They connect me to tradition, creativity, and self-sufficiency all at once.
And just like every year before, I’m not aiming for perfection—I’m learning as I go.
It’s Never Too Late to Start
If there’s one thing this journey has taught me, it’s this:
You don’t need a milestone birthday to reinvent yourself—but it’s a great excuse.
You don’t need to have everything figured out—you just need to begin.
And you are never too old to try something new, learn a new skill, or share your story in a new way.
At 50, I gave myself permission to explore.
At 59, I gave myself permission to be seen.
And I have a feeling the best is still ahead.
